Senator Kyl's Statement on President Bush's Immigration Proposal

January 8, 2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ), a member of the Senate leadership and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today issued the following statement regarding President Bush’s outline of principles related to dealing with illegal immigration in the United States:

Senator Kyl with Under Secretary for Border & Transportation Security Hutchinson during tour of Mexican Border.

“I commend President Bush for giving voice to the serious problems caused by illegal immigration and for suggesting ways to deal with them.

“The President, of course, espoused broad principles. It is appropriately up to Congress to work with the administration on the details. Many of us have fought very hard to provide the resources necessary to help enforce immigration laws and know all too well the severe burdens our failing immigration policy has placed on U.S. citizens.

“I hope we can make a real effort to find some consensus on a guest-worker program. But any such legislation must not create opportunities for amnesty nor confer U.S. citizenship to those who have violated U.S. laws.”

TIME Magazine Article: "Who Left the Door Open?" Despite all the talk of homeland security, sneaking into the U.S. is scandalously easy—and on the rise. Millions of illegal aliens will pour across the U.S.-Mexican border this year, many from countries hostile to America. TIME looks at the damage, the dangers and the reasons the U.S. fails to protect itself, by Donald L. Barlett & James B. Steele.
