Kyl Responds to Reid’s Push for Government-Run Insurance

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Whip Jon Kyl today made the following statement in response to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s renewed effort to push a government-run insurance plan:

“No matter what you call it or how you dress it up, the Democrats’ proposal is government-run insurance.

“Government-run insurance may come in several forms. The federal government could force states to swallow the government-plan, making them jump through a series of hoops in hopes of convincing the Health and Human Services Secretary that they should be allowed to opt-out. Or, alternatively, government-run insurance could be ‘triggered’ if the HHS Secretary certifies too many people lack insurance or insurance premiums are unaffordable – both of which will be the result of the Democrats’ proposal.

“So, any way you look at it, the Democrats proposal will result in government-run insurance as a key element in a trillion-dollar bill that raises premiums, increases taxes, and raids Medicare. This is not the ‘reform’ Americans are looking for.”
